The Susan Smith Award was created to honor an individual who exemplifies the dedication and un-ending energy Susan gave to Head Start children. This annual award is given to one who has shown outstanding commitment and support to Head Start in South Dakota.
Award Recipients
Carmen advocated for Head Start & Early Childhood every chance she got. She was a dedicated, active leader when it comes to children & families. Carmen’s leadership in the USD Head Start program was extraordinary - she led her staff with compassion, positivity, & understanding. She was a relentless fighter for children and advocates for children's health, education, socialization, and lifelong development in numerous ways.
The SDHSA Staff Scholarship is awarded annually to a Head Start Staff member who shows dedication towards advancing their education. The staff member must be from an SDHSA member program.
Scholarship Recipients
Evelyn Fee was employed by the Brookings Public School System from 1981-1999, first serving as Middle School then High School Library Assistant, followed by 10 years as Teaching Assistant in the Special Education Department. Evelyn was very dedicated to the idea of early childhood education and also opportunities for higher education.
The Evelyn Fee Memorial Parent Scholarship is awarded annually to a Head Start parents who show dedication towards advancing their education. The parent must have an enrolled child in a SDHSA member program.
Scholarship Recipients
The scholarships and awards distributed by the South Dakota Head Start Association are managed under the same rules, regulations and deadlines as the National Head Start Association. The SDHSA Scholarships and Awards Committee is appointed to select local winners who have demonstrated dedication and service to Head Start in South Dakota.
